When a commercial site got in touch about their annual drainage service contract, the team at Drain Care & Repair NW Ltd was called upon to carry out a full external clean of the storm and foul water systems. The job also included the extraction and disposal of debris from an onsite interceptor, along with a full inspection of the wider drainage network.

Overview Of The Project

The site includes a main building, external car parks, a front entrance roadway and a service yard, all of which rely on a network of storm and foul water drainage to keep the grounds running smoothly. Left unchecked, silt, leaves and general debris can build up within gullies, channels and chambers, slowing the flow of water and raising the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.

Drain Care & Repair NW Ltd was asked to carry out a scheduled clean of these external drainage assets, using a combination tanker fitted with high pressure water jetting and vacuum extraction equipment, so that the whole system was left clear and working as it should.

The Scope Of The Works

The quotation covered every external drainage asset on the site, including the car parks, the front entrance roadway, the service yard and the connections running from the external system through to the site outfall. Underground internal drainage, storm water pipework and the attenuation tanks sat outside the scope of this particular visit, giving the client a clear picture of what was and was not included from the outset.

Work Carried Out On Site

Storm Water Gullies & ACO Channels

Every storm water gully across the site was cleared of debris using vacuum extraction, then visually checked and flow tested to confirm water was moving freely. The ACO drainage channels received the same treatment, with high pressure jetting used alongside the combination tanker to shift any built up material. A section of ACO channel near the security gates was found to have suffered some damage, and a separate quotation was raised for its replacement.

Foul Water System & Inspection Chambers

The foul water drainage system, inspection chambers and manhole chambers were each given a visual inspection and flow test. Where any signs of a blockage were spotted, high pressure jetting was used to restore flow, with a CCTV camera survey kept in reserve for any chamber where a defect was suspected. Every chamber on this visit passed inspection with no defects noted.

Interceptor Extraction & Disposal

The site's single interceptor was fully emptied of debris, with the chamber given a visual inspection once clear. All waste was transferred and disposed of at a licensed municipal site, with the paperwork provided to the client so that a full record of the disposal was kept on file for compliance purposes.

Findings & Recommendations

Once the clean was complete, the site was left in excellent condition, with only one issue flagged for further action, the damaged ACO channel outside the security office. The recommendation was to excavate and replace this section, alongside a move to a six monthly planned maintenance schedule so that smaller issues are picked up long before they become bigger, costlier problems.

The Result

By the end of the visit, the client had a site with fully cleared storm and foul drainage, a serviced interceptor, and a clear written report setting out exactly what had been found and what to plan for next. Waste transfer notes were handed over for full traceability, giving the client peace of mind that the job had been carried out properly and on record.
